Winners of the #Ivotebecause Social Media Contest Announced

Dec 17, 2014

Mississauga’s new City Council congratulated the winners of the #Ivotebecause contest today. During the 2014 Municipal Election Campaign the City asked Mississauga youth why they vote – and they answered.

Using the hashtag #Ivotebecause, contestants shared their reasons for voting by tweeting, posting a picture or creating a video on social media. Each of the winners used a different social media channel to enter the contest– Facebook, Instagram and YouTube respectively. All winners are full-time students between the ages of 17 and 25 who call Mississauga home.

Winners:
• 1st Prize - $2000 towards school
Rahul Mehta, student at the University of Waterloo

• 2nd Prize - $1000 towards school
Angela Krone aka (Yeti_spagetti), student at the University of Waterloo

• 3rd Prize - $500 towards school
Maxwell Tran, student at the University of McMaster

The #Ivotebecause contest received many enthusiastic and creative entries. The contest encouraged youth to talk about why it’s important to vote and to be more meaningfully engaged in the life of their city. Visit the #Ivotebecause Storify site to see the winning entries. The contest entries were judged by a panel based on creativity and social media reach.

The panel included:

Mayor Bonnie Crombie, City of Mississauga, (joined panel after Election)
Patricia Lonergan, Editor-in-Chief, Metroland South (Mississauga News)
Khaled Iwamura, Editor, InSauga
Trevor Sookraj, Student Trustee, Peel District School Board
