On July 1, Mississauga teenagers ages 12 to 14 can ride MiWay for free using the City’s new Freedom Pass. Teens can take unlimited bus rides, on all routes, around Mississauga, with the exception of route 88 Wonderland. They can also use their pass to swim for free at both indoor and outdoor City-owned pools during public swim time.
“The Freedom Pass is an opportunity for MiWay to introduce transit to our young people,” said Geoff Marinoff, Director of Mississauga Transit. “Last year’s program was such a success we ran out of Freedom Passes. This year we are doubling the amount of passes available to youth. It allows our young people to travel independently throughout the city on MiWay and make use of city pools – all for free.”
Last year’s Freedom Pass pilot project was a success, with more than 5,000 Passes being distributed. Teens also used their pass 12,300 times at City-owned pools.
“Based on the positive feedback we received about the program, the Mayor and Members of Council have approved the continuation of the program this summer,” says Joanne Foote, Community Development co-ordinator with the City’s Recreation Division. “All summer long, teens can explore Mississauga by visiting attractions, parks, libraries and community centres using transit.”
According to Foote, many Freedom Pass holders were new visitors to the City’s community centres, who were inspired to get active during the summer months.
Freedom Pass applications will be accepted starting Friday, May 1. There will be 10,000 available citywide. To apply:
• visit one of the City’s community centres with a valid piece of photo ID displaying proof of age (e.g. health card or passport)
• complete a Freedom Pass application form – parental/guardian approval is needed
• a photo of the pass holder will be taken during the application process
Only valid, photographed Freedom Pass holders are eligible to ride MiWay for free. All other riders must pay regular fares. For more information about the Freedom Pass, please visit mississauga.ca/freedompass.
