Province Pledges $450,000 to Fund Mississauga's Lakeview Waterfront Pier Revitalization Project

May 01, 2015

Today, the Honourable Charles Sousa, Minister of Finance and MPP for Mississauga South, announced $450,000 in provincial funding for Lakeview’s Western Pier, located on Mississauga’s southeastern shores. The funding will go towards environmental and structural studies which are prerequisites for preparing the pier for public access.

“This funding announcement by the provincial government is a tremendous investment that will help the City of Mississauga further develop our Inspiration Lakeview plan, which will help unleash the potential of our waterfront. I want to thank Ward 1 Councillor Jim Tovey for his tremendous leadership to move this initiative forward,” Mayor Crombie said. “This is another example of the City of Mississauga partnering with Premier Kathleen Wynne’s government to achieve real results for residents. Working together we are building up Lakeview, Mississauga and all of Ontario,” Mayor Crombie added.

In 2014, the City of Mississauga completed a feasibility study that mapped out potential access routes to use the 50-year-old Pier, which extends 550 metres into Lake Ontario.

The Western Pier is part of the Lakeview lands, which consist of 245 acres, including a 200-acre brownfield, the former site of Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) Lakeview Generating Station and an industrial area north of the OPG lands. Since 2013, the City of Mississauga, the Province of Ontario and OPG have partnered to develop a shared vision for the Lakeview lands.

“After multiple community consultations, stakeholder sessions and visioning exercises, we developed a plan for Inspiration Lakeview, which included access to the Western Pier,” said Mississauga Ward 1 Councillor Jim Tovey, a long-time advocate for the revitalization of Lakeview lands. “Minister Sousa’s funding announcement will allow us to do all the necessary work to move forward with connecting our city to Lake Ontario. We’ve been working with the Province and the OPG to make the revitalization of Lakeview, a vibrant, sustainable community on the city’s waterfront.”

Crombie added, “While the feasibility study uncovered some important learnings, this dedicated funding will allow for further studies, ensuring public safety and safe access to the Pier before final restoration begins.”

Inspiration Lakeview
In 2014, the City developed a master plan for the area titled Inspiration Lakeview.  The plan proposes long-term, phased-in development of six sustainable neighbourhoods along the waterfront. Each neighbourhood will offer a variety of uses including residential housing; vibrant, public open spaces; cultural and recreational amenities; various community services and employment opportunities. Inspiration Lakeview is a vision for the future. The Master Plan was developed in consultation with the OPG, the Province, community members and City staff.
