Mississauga Moves Ahead on Affordable Housing Program

Feb 10, 2016

City of Mississauga Council today approved a work plan for an affordable housing program for the city. The program is based on creating a supportive environment for the development of affordable housing.

The Affordable Housing Program will look for bold and innovative approaches to respond to the City’s affordable housing needs. It will expand on work done to date and focus on actions to narrow the gap between supply and demand, with an emphasis on affordable rental and ownership housing.

“Mississauga is a city in demand. As we continue to grow, it is important that we ensure that those coming to our city have housing options that are affordable,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “Our current supply of affordable housing is simply not meeting the demands of a growing population, which is why it is imperative that we take bold action to grow the number and type of affordable housing units in Mississauga. To build a complete city we need to make affordable housing a priority and we will do this through our new, bold Affordable Housing Program.”

Highlights of the program include:
• Measures to increase the supply of affordable rental and ownership housing and
• Ways to protect the existing affordable housing options, particularly in areas identified for redevelopment, such as the Hurontario Street corridor

The program will also explore new partnerships, innovative strategies and implementation measures, along with opportunities to leverage existing legislation at all levels of government.

“The City of Mississauga’s Strategic Plan identifies affordable housing as a priority,” said Ed Sajecki, Commissioner of Planning and Building. “Working in partnership with the Region of Peel, the Provincial and Federal governments, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, the private sector and non-profit agencies, our goal is to increase access to affordable housing options. This work plan is a strong step toward meeting that goal.”

The City’s Affordable Housing Program is expected to be established by the end of 2016.
