City Works Yards Win Safe and Sustainable Snowfighting Award

Feb 11, 2016

The City of Mississauga has won the 2015 Safe and Sustainable Snowfighting Award that recognizes environmental consciousness and effective management in the storage of winter road salt.

All four of the City's works yards – Clarkson, Mavis, Malton and Meadowvale have won the award from the Salt Institute, a non-profit organization based in the United States with a goal of advancing the benefits of salt.

"I commend staff at all four of our works yards for their efforts in managing the storage of winter road salt," said Geoff Wright, Director, Works Operations & Maintenance. “We are more environmentally conscious in our application of salt. Less salt is applied in areas identified as being environmentally sensitive and our use of anti-icing and pre-wetting techniques reduces the amount of dry salt required during snow storms.”

The City had to meet a range of criteria to be considered for the award including: safe storage, equipment use, environmental and housekeeping of salt for winter road maintenance.
