Mississauga Library System's Historic Images Gallery Makes History

Feb 03, 2006

The Mississauga Library System's "Historic Images Gallery" was awarded the inaugural Archival and Preservation Achievement Award by the Ontario Library Association (OLA) at the OLA's 2006 Super Conference yesterday.

The Mississauga Library System's "Historic Images Gallery" features approximately 1,500 images of Mississauga history including photos of places, people, and events as well as early maps of the area.  The gallery is of interest to anyone interested in Mississauga's past such as teachers, students, researchers, genealogists, and collectors. The gallery is located on the Library's website at www.mississauga.ca/historicimages.  Library staff will continue to develop this collection adding more heritage images over time.

"The gallery enables the Mississauga Library System to take an active role in both preserving and promoting our community's heritage," said Don Mills, Director of Library Services. "This award is a reflection of the Library's partnerships with the Museums of Mississauga,  Heritage Mississauga, and the Cemeteries Section of the Community Services Department of the City, as well as Corporate IT and the eCity Team. This project was a true group effort."

The OLA award recognizes Ontario based individuals and institutions making significant achievements on a personal or institutional level in the field of preservation and conservation of library and archival materials.  The achievements must be practical and be able to be used in other libraries. The OLA's Super Conference is being held from February 1 to 4 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. For more information on the awards and conference please visit www.accessola.com
