Central Library is Celebrating its Silver Anniversary!

Central Library is inviting the community to its 25th anniversary celebration on Saturday, October 29, 2016. The celebration includes a formal ceremony, followed by crafts, puzzles, games and other fun activities for the whole family. Fans of Canadian fiction can also listen to Canadian writer Terry Fallis talk about his new novel, Poles Apart. The community event will kick-off a year of activities to mark the silver milestone.

Background:

  • The story of Central Library began in 1956 when Toronto Township established a public library. 
  • The first Central Library opened on November 13, 1963 in Cooksville.
  • When Toronto Township became the Town of Mississauga, the library was renamed the Mississauga Library System.
  • In 1974 when the town became the City of Mississauga, the library moved with the City’s new offices from Cooksville to City Centre.
  • Central Library's current location at 301 Burnhamthorpe Road West opened on September 23, 1991.
  • The library is a welcoming public space that serves residents of all ages.
  • As Mississauga grows into a 21st century city, the story of Central Library continues with exciting plans to meet the changing needs of the community.
