Mississauga Council Adopts Recorded Voting

Jan 26, 2017

Voting on City matters will now be registered through a new recording system. Mississauga City Council implemented Governance Committee’s recommendation to amend the Council Procedure By-law to include recorded votes.  Recorded votes will be taken on all motions with some exceptions at Council and some Standing Committees.  These include General Committee, Planning and Development Committee, Budget Committee and Audit Committee

“The role of Governance Committee is to continuously improve how the municipality is governed,” said Pat Saito, Chair, Governance Committee and Ward 9 Councillor. “The recommendation to move forward with recorded votes emphasizes Mississauga’s commitment to providing a transparent and accountable municipal government.”

Previously, recorded votes were only taken when either the Mayor or a Councillor requested them.

“Recorded votes strengthen openness, transparency and accountability at City Hall,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “Knowing how your elected officials voted on important public policy decisions, which could have lasting consequences, is fundamental to a well-functioning democracy. The use of recorded votes is an opportunity for the City of Mississauga to better engage and further inform residents about the city-building decisions and actions being made by Council and staff.”
