Maja Prentice has lived in Mississauga for 39 years. She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and moved to Canada permanently in 1960 to marry her Canadian high school sweetheart. In 1971 Maja completed her assimilation by relinquishing her American Citizenship to become a naturalized Canadian Citizen. She was first elected to City Council in December 1985.
Councillor Prentice became involved in municipal politics because of her long time community involvement. Over the years, she has been president of the Applewood Hills Homeowner's Association, president of the Applewood Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society, a provincial appointee to the Peel Regional Housing Authority and a Director of the Mississauga Rainbow Festival.
The Councillor has chaired the Mississauga Committee on Obscenity which dealt with adult video stores in the City. She also assisted the community in dealing with nuisance and safety concerns associated with after hours clubs. She was elected President of Peel Living from 1989 to 1996 and is currently on the Board of Directors. She currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Living Arts Centre and the Mississauga International Children's Festival.
Councillor Prentice was appointed to the Executive Committee of Peel Regional Police Committee on Child Pornography on the Internet. As a member of Peel Regional Council, Councillor Prentice is currently Vice Chair of the Public Works Committee and is Chair of the Waste Management SubCommittee. She is also a member of the Toronto Regional Conservation Authority (TRCA), Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) Noise Management Committee and Consultative Committee as well as the newly formed Integrated Municipal Enforcment Team (IMET). Councillor Prentice also served on the Greater Toronto Services Board (GTSB) as an alternate for the Mayor and was her representative on the Board.
The Councillor's business experience includes owning and operating a retail business for six years. She was program coordinator for Cable 10 Mississauga and Data Processing Supervisor for Ontario Hydro.
Councillor Prentice has no political affiliation.
Councillor Prentice lists her hobbies as music, sports, travel, history and her family. She and her husband of 46 years, Gordon, have two children, Lisa Anne Prentice and Andra Marie Kacira and four grandchildren, Daniel and Parker Slanina and Jacob and Hannah Kacira.
