Prior to the eighteenth century, cookbooks were used by wealthy members of a family only, where the household's mistress would read instructions to servants who could likely not read themselves. By the mid to later years of the century, cookbooks were designed for the use of the middle class and were more widely used in homes. As household and kitchen technology advanced in the late nineteenth century, so too did the precision and nature of recipes, which now had exact directions for temperature, for example.
