Description: A hardcover book entitled "Anna Ross: The Orphan of Waterloo" by author Grace Kennedy. Book has a red buckram cover with gold gild stamp on the front and on the spine. Front and back also has an embossed border. First page inscribed with "E.A Jarvis(?) With (?) love and best wishes of a sincere friend, (?) 7th 1860(?)."

Grace Kennedy (1782-1825) was born in Pinmore, Ayrshire, Scotland and later moved to Edinburgh. Kennedy predominately wrote novels with religious tendencies. "Anna Ross" was originally published in 1823.

William Oliphant started his publishing business in 1808 and published mostly juvenile books until 1923 when he started publishing religious and biographical books. His son took over but became ill, and he had to take some partners in 1858, Robert Anderson and Thomas Robertson, who ran the business under the name of W. Oliphant & Co. By 1880 Thomas Robertson retired and they took a new partner in John Scott Ferrier, thus being known as Oliphant, Anderson and Ferrier. In 1915 the Oliphants bought back the rest of their firm. _
