Description: A baptismal gown or christening robe made out of fine white lawn cotton with four different patterns of lace trim. The dress has a bodice consisting of a decorative front panel composed of bands of broderie anglaise 3.5 cm wide angled vertically to waist with one of the bands as a gusset to give the centre shape to the bodice. From the waist to the shoulders an edging of broderie anglaise of a difficult patterns of scallops with flowers and leaves forms a cap over the sleeves which are also edges in the same pattern. The joins between the straight bands of broderie anglaise are sewn in twill cotton thread in herringbone stitch. A casing around the neck is also embroidered with herringbone stitch and edges with 1.2 cm of lace. The side seams and sleeve seams are sewn with French seams enclosing all raw edges. The robe fastens at the back with tapes one at the neck and the other at the waist drawing together a 17.5 cm placket (which has been extended with a tear 8 cm long). Marked inside in black ink with the name "Rose Gilchrist".

This christening gown was worn by Mrs. Rose Gilchrist's mother and her three sisters. Her mother was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1892. She also wore this gown for her christening in 1921. When Mrs. Glichrist emigrated form Scotland she brought it with her to Canada. She had hoped that her daughter could wear it at her christening but she was too large so Mrs. Gilchrist was the last to use it. Mrs. Gilchrist has a daughter and a son Brian.
