William A. Couse was born in Wellington County. He came to Streetsville in 1880 and stayed with his brother-in-law, Dr. Thom. William married Margaret Matilda Steen (d. Dec 11 1948). He launched a bee keeping enterprise in Streetsville that eventually had 200 colonies of bees. They produced the world famous clover honey and brought fame to Streetsville. He started a coal, grain and seed business in 1884 and developed a world-wide market. Among his many civic activities, William helped to organise the Ontario Horticultural Society, and was a member on the Board of the Royal Winter Fair. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Streetsville, and the Streetsville High School Board, and sang in the choir at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. He died in February 1947. The local newspaper reported that hundreds crowded the spacious church for his funeral, with scores of floral tributes testifying to the high esteem in which Mr. Couse was held by his wide circle of friends. Mr. William Couse house still stands today and is located on 25 Princess Street at the foot of Victoria street in Streetsville. William and Margaret had three children: Harold W, Alan L and Willa. |
