Richard Doddridge Blackmore (1825-1900) generally known as R. D. Blackmore, was born in Berkshire. The son of a Curate-in-Charge he studied at Blundellís School and Oxford University. He was a lawyer, a teacher and a fruit cultivator as well as a writer. Blackmoreís best known novel "Lorna Doone" was published in 1869. It was this novel that made him one of the most well known British authors of the time. He was known for his vivid descriptions and personification of the countryside and for showing a string sense of region in his novels. Blackmore acted as a pioneer of the new Romantic Movement in fiction that continued with Robert Louis Stevenson and others. Blackmore has been described as "proud, shy, reticent, strong-willed, sweet-tempered, and self-centered." Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor is a romance based on a group of historical characters set in the late 17th century in Devon and Somerset, particularly around the East Lyn Valley area of Exmoor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._D._Blackmore
