In 1980 the American Public Transit Association presented Mississauga Transit with a silver plaque in recognition for their safety record; they received the award of excellence for being the best in all urban areas in North America with a population between 250,000 and 500,000. Previously, in 1978, Mississauga Transit won the Canadian Urban Transit Association Award for improvement in employee safety record in all of Canada. (The Toronto Star, May 27 1980).
