Earth Day displays were organized in part by Mississauga's Clean City Campaign Executive Director Maureen Ricker. The displays sought to raise public awareness about recycling and waste management. The displays featured information about woodlot rehabilitation, naturalization, and composting, as well as Peel Region hazardous waste program.
Earth Day celebrations originated in 1969 by peace activist John McConnell. In 1970 U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson founded another Earth Day, celebrated in April. Today most countries celebrate Earth Day on April 22. However, the United Nations celebrates Earth Day on the March Equinox.
