Description: A rectangular cardboard and paper photographic scrap book. The outside cover is black and is tied through two holes with a red ribbon. The inside cover page is mint green and has "Diamond Jubilee, St. Lawrence Starch Co., Ltd, Port Credit, 1889-1949, John M. Gray" printed with black ink. The inside pages are beige and show various photographs of staff and buildings at this company. The names of the staff are printed in black ink along with some humorous comments about the business. Many of the pages have ink line drawings related to the particular area the business focuses on including a crane, delivery truck, time sheet and broom. All photographs are in black and white and many are cropped. Photographs, drawings and writing are on one side of cardboard only. History: The St. Lawrence Starch Company was founded in 1889 by John Gray. It was a corn wet-milling operation with the purpose of producing starch and glucose from corn. Many of the product lines produced by St. Lawrence Starch are still in use today such as Durham Starch and Bee Hive Corn Syrup. Food products were only a small portion of the business done at St. Lawrence Starch as starch is an additive in many industrial products such as cement and plastic. St. Lawrence Starch was located at the bottom of Hurontario Street and Lakeshore Road in Port Credit. It was a major industry for this area. The milling operation closed down in 1990 due to competition and high tariffs on corn. In 1993 St. Lawrence Starch announced a marketing alliance with Cargill, Minneapolis, which provides Cargill with exclusive sales services of corn sweeteners and corn starches in the Canadian Market. St. Lawrence Starch Company prided itself on itís involvement in sponsoring national and local sports events. Bee Hive Corn Syrup sales quadrupled in the 1930's after St. Lawrence Starch made a commitment to sponsoring the National Hockey League through a marketing distribution of pictures of the players for free with proof of purchase. St. Lawrence Starch, through Bee Hive Corn Syrup, also sponsored The Bee Hive Giant Slalom race which ran for six years through out the 1960's. It drew contestants from all over North America and was one of the pioneering ski events in Canada. The ear muffs shown were part of the promotion of this event.
