At today's meeting of Council, the City of Mississauga was recognized by Metrolinx as the
Smart Commute Regional Employer of the Year.
"Today's recognition is especially meaningful as the Smart Commute program reflects our
strategic goals and plans for the future," said City Manager and CAO Janice Baker.

that reduce traffic congestion, improve health and lessen our impact on the
The award was presented to the City by Bruce McCuaig, President and CEO of Metrolinx. The City
of Mississauga offers employees discounted transit, bike-share, secure bike storage, carpool
ride-matching, and policy supports including reimbursement for cycling for business in addition
to hosting regular Smart Commute events. Winners were selected by an independent panel of
community members from various sectors across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).
Nominations were evaluated based on the employers commitment to the program, leadership in
their communities, innovation and results.
"Smart Commute is a concept that has clearly captured the interest of some of the most
innovative organizations in the GTHA," said Bruce McCuaig, President and CEO of Metrolinx.
"They understand that we can no longer afford to ignore the impact that commuter gridlock
has on our health, our economy and the environment. The City of Mississauga has set a great
example with the scope of their program and their willingness to pilot new ideas."
Smart Commute is a program of Metrolinx and the municipalities in the GTHA. To date, more than
150 employers with 350,000 employees have signed on to the Smart Commute program. Services such
as the Carpool Zone online ride-matching service are also available to the public at
www.smartcommute.ca. Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario. For more information,
