City of Mississauga Recognized as Smart Commute Regional Employer of the Year

Dec 15, 2010

At today's meeting of Council, the City of Mississauga was recognized by Metrolinx as the Smart Commute Regional Employer of the Year.

"Today's recognition is especially meaningful as the Smart Commute program reflects our strategic goals and plans for the future," said City Manager and CAO Janice Baker. "The City will continue to support employees in choosing sustainable commuting options that reduce traffic congestion, improve health and lessen our impact on the environment."

The award was presented to the City by Bruce McCuaig, President and CEO of Metrolinx. The City of Mississauga offers employees discounted transit, bike-share, secure bike storage, carpool ride-matching, and policy supports including reimbursement for cycling for business in addition to hosting regular Smart Commute events. Winners were selected by an independent panel of community members from various sectors across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). Nominations were evaluated based on the employerÂ’s commitment to the program, leadership in their communities, innovation and results.

"Smart Commute is a concept that has clearly captured the interest of some of the most innovative organizations in the GTHA," said Bruce McCuaig, President and CEO of Metrolinx. "They understand that we can no longer afford to ignore the impact that commuter gridlock has on our health, our economy and the environment. The City of Mississauga has set a great example with the scope of their program and their willingness to pilot new ideas."

Smart Commute is a program of Metrolinx and the municipalities in the GTHA. To date, more than 150 employers with 350,000 employees have signed on to the Smart Commute program. Services such as the Carpool Zone online ride-matching service are also available to the public at www.smartcommute.ca. Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario. "The City of Mississauga has been involved with Smart Commute since 2004," said Geoff Wright director, Transportation Project Office and Business Services. "Working together, we have established a program that provides supports for employees to choose various commuting options. I encourage more employers to get involved with Smart Commute Mississauga to support their employees in making sustainable commuting choices"

As Canada's sixth largest city, Mississauga is home to 734,000 residents and 55,000 businesses, including 63 Fortune 500 companies with Canadian head offices or major divisional head offices.
