City of Mississauga to Offer Grants for Community Cultural Festivals and Celebrations

Feb 13, 2008

The City of Mississauga's Office of Arts and Culture has established a new grant program to support community cultural festivals and celebrations. The Community Cultural Festivals and Celebrations Grant Program was approved by Council on January 30 for immediate implementation.

A maximum of $150,000 will be transferred from the City's Reserve for the Arts, to the Office of Arts and Culture to disseminate to new and emerging festivals and celebrations ($25,000) and established festivals and celebrations ($125,000).

"In making this recommendation, we undertook a best practices review, including 12 Canadian municipalities," said director of Arts and Culture, Zainub Verjee. "Our findings show that governments see financial support of festivals and celebrations as an effective mechanism to help achieve economic development, partnership development, community development, cultural development and the fostering of social inclusion in diverse populations."

Recipients of grants must be community-based, non-profit and their events must be open to the public, publicized city-wide, and predominantly cultural in content. Criteria and details pertaining to grant applications are available at www.mississauga.ca. The application deadline is Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 4 p.m.

Organizations requiring information regarding the Community Cultural Festivals and Celebrations Grant Program are invited to contact the Office of Arts and Culture at 905-615-3200 ext. 4064 or visit www.mississauga.ca the week of February 18. An information session for potential applicants will be held on Tuesday, February 26 at 7 p.m. in Committee Room A, at the Mississauga Civic Centre, 300 City Centre Drive.

Mississauga is Canada's sixth largest city with a population of more than 700,000. With well-established infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities, the City is considered to be an employer of choice, delivering quality municipal programs and services to its citizens. Mississauga is a dynamic, diverse and progressive municipality, known for its economic strength and for being Canada's safest city.
