Mississauga's Skateboard Park Officially Opens

Sep 24, 2003

MISSISSAUGA, September 24, 2003 --- Skateboarders of all ages are invited to come out and 'backside,' 'boardslide' and skate as 'gnarly' as they can for the official opening of Mississauga's first permanent skateboard park to be held on:

Date: Saturday, September 27, 2003
Time:11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Location:
Mississauga's Skateboard Park
705 Matheson Boulevard East
east side of Iceland Arena

An official ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. with Mayor Hazel McCallion, Councillors Frank Dale and Pat Saito and Community Services Commissioner Paul Mitcham. Other speakers include a representative from the Action Sports Coalition (ASC) and from the donors, Kinsmen Club of Mississauga, West 49, St. Lawrence Cement/Dufferin Concrete and Full Tilt.

A member of The West 49 Team will be 'Going Big' and performing a skateboarding move through a ceremonial ribbon to officially open the skateboard park and kick off The West 49 Team demonstrations and other skateboarding activities scheduled to take place until 1 p.m.

In 2001, City of Mississauga staff conducted an Internet survey that generated feedback from skateboarding enthusiasts about the type of facility they would like and where it should be located. The feedback helped guide staff in the design and development of this 'first of its kind' facility in Mississauga.

The skateboard park is free of charge and open from sunrise to sunset. It is designed to accommodate all skill levels from novice to expert. Wearing protective gear is recommended and skateboarders should avoid using the park in icy or wet conditions.
