Schools, Day Cares, Places of Religious Assembly

Schools, day cares and places of religious assembly are permitted in a number of zones. Review subsection 2.1.9 - Use Permitted in More than One Zone Category for more information.

There may be other restrictions that apply to these uses such as:
  • frontage on some streets
  • site plan approval
  • parking requirements
  • applicable law
Day care and school uses are not permitted within the Lester B Pearson International Airport (LBPIA) Operating Area. For more information review subsection 2.1.23 - Lester B. Pearson International Airport Operating Area Restriction.

Schools

Mississauga's Zoning By-law defines 3 different types of schools:
  • Commercial School
  • Private School
  • Public School
Commercial School: a building, structure or part thereof, where specialized instruction is provided and may include a business school, a trade school, a driving school, a dance school, a music school, a martial arts school, or a tutoring school.

Private School a building, structure or part thereof, where academic instruction in a full range of the subjects of the elementary or secondary school courses of study and any other educational activity is provided, and may include a nursery school.

Public School a building, structure or part thereof, where academic instruction in a full range of the subjects of the elementary or secondary school courses of study, continuing education and any other educational activities are provided under the jurisdiction of the Peel District School Board, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, the Conseil Scolaire de District Centre-Sud-Ouest, the Conseil Scolaire de District Catholique Centre-Sud or the Province of Ontario.

Parking

Day Care

Daycare - a building, structure or part thereof, with or without an outdoor play area, used for temporary care which does not exceed twelve (12) consecutive hours in one (1) day, of more than five (5) persons. Care may be provided for children, seniors and/or disabled persons.

An outdoor playground may be required for a day care use. Site Plan Approval is required for the change of use from residential to day care in a residential zone and for the outdoor play areas accessory to a day care.


 

Place of Religious Assembly

Place of Religious Assembly - a building, structure or part thereof, that is used as a place of public worship

Worship Area - the sum of the areas, whether above or below established grade, measured between the inside of walls of a sanctuary, hall or meeting room, that a religious group, organization or denomination utilizes for the observance of its religious services, including any balcony or area from which the religious services conducted in the sanctuary, hall or meeting room can be observed, or area that can be opened on a temporary basis to a sanctuary, hall or meeting room by the removal or opening of any walls or partitions, and any pulpit, altar area, choir or musicians area, but excluding any vestibule

Where the worship area of a place of religious assembly includes permanent fixed seating or non-fixed movable seating for clergy, leaders, choirs, or musicians, such seating or area shall be included in the calculation of seating for the purpose of calculating required parking. Where a community/multi use hall is equal to or less than the gross floor area of the worship area, no additional parking shall be required for that use.
