Mississauga City Day was celebrated on Saturday, September 7, 1974 with a parade that began at Square One Shopping Centre and travelled along Highway 10 and Lakeshore Road to Port Credit Memorial Park. The parade was followed by an official ceremony at the park with Mayor Martin Dobkin, Regional Chairman Lou Parsons, M.P. Tony Abbott, M.P.P. Doug Kennedy, Chief Lloyd King of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, and Miss Mississauga Debbie Giffin. Festivities included live entertainment, arts and crafts booths, an outdoor fire and corn roast, aquatic demonstrations on the Credit River, canoe races, crafts and dancers from the Six Nations Indian Reserve, skydiving, old-timer hockey at Port Credit Arena, a bicycle race through Mississauga and area, and a presentation to well-known resident, jockey Sandy Hawley. The finale was a fireworks display over Port Credit Harbour. Mississauga amalgamated as a city on January 1, 1974. Mississauga City Day brought together communities throughout Mississauga to celebrate their corporate identity as a new, rapidly growing city. Photographed by Bert Hoferichter, MPA.
