Description: The Women's Land Army was formed during World War I, to help to fill the gap left by so many men enlisting in the war. The women would work on farms, helping to grow food and harvest it. In World War II the Women's Land Army helped to provide food at a time when the German U-boats were destroying merchant ships bringing food to Britain. There were branches of the WLA in Canada. The members of the Women's Land Army were also known as "farmerettes". This photo shows a group of farmerettes standing beside a wagon.
