Description: On October 25, 1969, a faulty pipe in a gas line beneath the junction of Airport and Derry Roads in Malton exploded, causing a huge fire at the four corners. One person, Jean Perigo, was killed and about twenty others were injured. The fire was so hot that firefighters were unable to get near the fire. Nine stores and several houses and cars were destroyed in the fire. Slide of an exhibit in Bygone Malton, a display of quilts by Annie May Lewis Johnston, at the Malton District Library, 1978.
