Description: 42 John Street South. Plan 300W, pt. Lots 3, 5. This building is an L-shaped vernacular structure of one-and-a-half stories typical of those found in the neighbourhood west of the Credit River, south of Lakeshore Road West. Though there have been slight window modifications since this photo was taken in 1980, the house retains much of its original character. In 1897, John Charles Peer, mariner, acquired the northerly portion of Lot 3 north of Lake Street from his brother. Although altered cosmetically, the general design of the frame house indicates a date of construction at the turn of the twentieth century. The house is first illustrated on the 1910 fire insurance plan. The property is designated under the terms of the Ontario Heritage Act and is located within the Old Port Credit Village Heritage Conservation District.
