Description: Thomas Ingersoll, the father of Laura Secord, was born in Westfield, and moved with his wife and family to the Niagara District in Upper Canada. In 1805 he leased the Government Inn, Port Credit, which had been built in 1798 on Governor Simcoe's orders, along with other inns along the shoreline of Lake Ontario, as a stopping place for travellers by boat. Ingersoll was also commissioned to build and maintain a road through the bush. The slide shows a page from his account book for Government Inn. |
