Conditions of Use: See Terms of Use & Privacy Statement. Description: Located behind the old Stone Church. Entrance is from Dundas Street into the St. John’s cemetery parking lot. According to William Perkins Bull this is said to be Peel County’s first formal burying ground, dating from 1810. It was laid out to meet the needs of the early settlers who lived at Dixie and surrounding areas, such as Cooksville and Burnhamthorpe. In the 1860s the cemetery was divided. The original pioneer section stood beside and directly to the north behind the old Stone Church. Land north of the laneway and south of the present Presbyterian Church was sold to the Presbyterians. East of an old laneway which runs parallel with Cawthra Road, and behind St. John’s Anglican Church, became St. John’s Anglican Cemetery. That cemetery later acquired further land to the east.
