Description: The Southgate house, on the north side of Barbertown Road, was built in Colonial style on the property where the Robert Barber house had stood. The Robert Barber house was situated behind William Barber's house. According to Mary Manning: "The two Barbers [of the Barber Woollen Mills] and Bennet Franklin built houses for themselves along the road to the [Barber] mill. William's house was on the north-east corner of the Streetsville Road and the Barbertown Road; the one behind it on the Barbertown Road was Robert's (later the Southgate property), while Bennet Franklin's was on the south side of the road closer to the mill and was destroyed by fire in 1927 or 1928". The Robert Barber house was destroyed by fire ca 1900, and the Southgate house was built some time in the 1920s on that property. Originally listed on the Heritage Inventory, it was demolished in 1981.
