Description: On October 25, 1969, a faulty pipe in a gas line beneath the junction of Airport and Derry Roads in Malton exploded, causing a huge fire at the four corners. One person, Jean Perigo, a long-time Malton resident, was killed and about twenty others were injured. The fire was so hot that firefighters were unable to get near the fire. Nine stores and several houses and cars were destroyed in the fire. The fire covered an area of the Four Corners of Malton west of Airport Road and north and south of Derry Road. Forty-nine cars and trucks which had been parked behind the stores at the Four Corners were destroyed in the fire. Original slide at Museums of Mississauga. Description as of January 2013.
