Description: Maurice "Rocket" Richard was one of the greatest hockey players ever to play the game. Born in Montreal, Quebec, he played with junior teams before joining the Montreal Canadiens in 1942-43. He topped the NHL in goals scored four times in his career. In the year that Richard retired, W. G. (Jerry) Love, Director of Recreation for the Township of Toronto, invited Richard to come to the area for the 14th annual Christmas Party of the Toronto Township Hockey League at Dixie Arena, during which event he met the young players and even refereed a game. The Toronto Township Recreation and Parks Department presented Richard with an onyx pen and pencil desk set. This photo shows the presentation to Richard by Danny Higashi, age 14, of Lorne Park, twice winner of the Toronto Township Hockey League's Quaker Oats Most Valuable Player award. Original photo at Museums of Mississauga. Description as of March 2013.
