In Mississauga the Dog Owners' Liability Act is enforced by Animal Services and the Region of Peel Police Department.  Each reported dog bite case will be investigated on an individual basis to determine what steps are necessary to ensure public safety. 

 Dog Owners' Liability Act

Anyone who is bitten or attacked by a dog may seek compensation for damages caused by the bite or attack.  This is a civil/legal matter and Animal Services is not involved in this process.


WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE BITTEN
Flush the wound immediately with warm soapy water.  Seek medical attention as soon as possible.  Report the incident to Mississauga Animal Services. 


REPORTING A DOG BITE
In accordance with Provincial health regulations and to ensure public safety all dog bites should be reported to Mississauga Animal Services by calling 905-896-5858 or Peel Police at 905-453-3311.

  • Dog owner's name, address, phone number
  • Witnesses name, address, phone number
  • Time and Date of incident
  • Location of incident
  • Details of the incident

PROVIDING A WRITTEN STATEMENT
Victims and witnesses may be asked to provide a written statement.  The witness statement should be a fact-based account of the reported incident explaining who, what, when, where and how.  Photos are acceptable provided the photographers signature and the date the photo was taken is recorded on the back of each photo.
