At Work

At WorkWhen health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot manifest, strength cannot fight, wealth becomes useless, and intelligence cannot be applied.

If in general we are awake for 16 hours per day and we spend 8 of them at work (not counting commuting time) it is logical to state we spend more than 50% of our time at work.

It's no wonder that we are having a difficult time fitting in 60 minutes of "exercise time" every day.

However there is hope. Sessions of 10minutes of physical activity do provide health benefits.
There are ways to include physical activity into our work day.

  • Scheduled short meetings for one or two people can be walk&talk meetings.
  • Partner with a co-worker and schedule lunch time walks (min. 10 minutes) as meetings in your agenda.
  • Think of activity times as scheduled meetings. People don't miss meetings that are scheduled.
  • Introduce a 10 minute walk break into meetings. Place it as an agenda item (walk inside or outside) then return to the meeting for the next item.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator. (even if you are on the highest floor you can begin by taking the stairs one or two flights then extend the number of flights each week)
  • Borrow a pedometer. Track your steps. Increase your steps up to 10,000 steps per day. Use physical activity as a team building or team development exercise.
  • A pedometer challenge to walk to a city or a biggest loser challenge can bring staff together, and encourage healthy living.

    Each of these activities can and have been accomplished at various work places in Mississauga.
  • Work environments are places of efficiency and productivity. Daily physical activity has been proven to:

  • increase work efficiency
  • increase energy levels
  • improve creativity
  • increase productivity
  • reduce work related sick time.

    It is important to include daily physical activity in our lives. It's hard to find time to include that activity. It's not impossible. Make daily physical activity a commitment, make it a priority, see the changes it will make in your work environment and more importantly in your life.
