Description: A portrait of James Hamilton from the 1877 Historical Atlas of Peel County. Born in Ireland around 1830, James Hamilton came to Canada in 1850 and was one of the principal merchants of Port Credit from the 1850s on. He married Alicia Perry Griffiths in 1863 and they had three children -- Frederick J., Charles Griffith, and Alice. Hamilton clerked for Robert Cotton until 1860, when he bought the store which was also a general foods and sundry business. He also bought and sold grain for many years, and maintained a large grain warehouse. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1867. James Hamilton died in 1903 in Port Credit and is buried in Trinity Anglican Cemetery.
