What We Do

The Compliance and Licensing Section's role is to:

  • Deliver a comprehensive enforcement program
  • To ensure compliance with a wide variety of municipal, regulatory and licensing by-laws
  • Help maintain an acceptable quality of life for Mississauga residents
  • Protect the health, safety and welfare of the community through education and enforcement

This responsibility is discharged on a day-to-day basis by the Compliance and Licensing Enforcement Officers who administer the municipal by-laws. By-laws are local laws which are passed by the Council of the City of Mississauga.

The staff of Compliance and Licensing Enforcement respond to complaints relating to violations of City by-laws including but not limited to:

  • Property standards violations: building and property maintenance, long grass and nuisance weeds, snow/ice removal on private property, certain landlord and tenant issues, dead and dangerous trees and grafitti
  • Noise violations
  • Public nuisances such as trash, debris, dumping, inoperable or unlicensed vehicles on provate property
  • Business licensing - ensuring local businesses have obtained their relevant business licence for their class and comply with various regulations for that class of business
  • Zoning and land use violations: accessory dwelling units ("basement apartments") commercial vehicle parking and boat/trailer storage within residential areas, lawn parking, driveway widths and setback issues, accessory structures and businesses operating from a residence
  • Fencing, roadway obstructions, encroachments on City property
  • Swimming pool enclosures, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

Compliants may be filed by fax, in person, in writing, by telephone or by email. Please ensure that you include your name, address and telephone number. Complaints without this information will not be investigated.
