Description: It is generally believed that Benares, the Harris family home, was the model for Jalna in Mazo de la Roche’s novels about the Whiteoaks, as were the Harris family themselves. In this letter, dated 1927, Mazo seems to confirm this, stating ... There is an old house which partially suggested Jalna. It to was built by a retired officer of the British Army in India, and is named Benares... Later she denied that Benares was the model for Jalna. As a matter of interest, Benares was built by Edgar Neave who gave it its name, which Captain James Harris kept after he bought the house. Photograph copied by Mississauga Library from the Harris Family Collection, copies of which were given to the Ontario Heritage Foundation for reproduction purposes, and now at the Museums of Mississauga
