Storm Sewer Use By-law

Any material that enters municipal storm drains flow untreated to our streams and rivers, and then to Lake Ontario. It is for this reason that the City of Mississauga has enacted the Storm Sewer Use By-Law (By-law 259-05) in order to help ensure that catchbasins are used to collect storm water only.

The Storm Sewer Use By-law prevents the discharge of any of the following materials into the storm water system including:
Pesticides, herbicides or fungicides
Fuels
Oil or greases
Paints and solvents
Sewage
Hazardous wastes
Any other material that may impair the quality of the water system or the structure of the storm water system

For a full list of substances restricted or banned by the Storm Sewer Use By-Law refer to the full document below.

The maximum fine for failure to follow this By-Law can result for an individual up to $10,000 for a first offence and up to $25,000 for any subsequent offences. For a Corporation or business, the a fine can be up to $50,000 for a first offence and $100,000 for any subsequent offence.
