High Rise Building Safety

During the summer, there is always the desire for increased ventilation, and the City of Mississauga, Enforcement Division wishes to warn occupants in highrise buildings of the dangers of open windows and to be vigilant with young children who reside in or are visiting such buildings.

It is important for occupants of apartments to realize that the purpose of window screens is to prevent insects from passing through the window into the apartment. They are not designed or intended to prevent children from falling through a window. This may be achieved by a mechanical safety device which prevents the window from opening more than four (4) inches. These devices are integral to new windows and may be retroactively installed on older windows.

These safety devices are required by the City of Mississauga Property Standards By-law 654-98 and are usually available simply by asking your landlord to install them.

It is important that residents of high-rise buildings realize that if they remove or disable these devices they may be endangering the lives of any small children who live or visit their apartment.
