Description: A portrait of William Barber from the 1877 Historical Atlas of Peel County. William Barber immigrated to Canada in 1822 from County Antrim, Ireland. In 1837 he and his brother, Robert Barber, purchased a woollen mill in Georgetown. Business interests expanded and they purchased the William Comfort mill on the Credit River, south of Streetsville. Other factory buildings were added and as they prospered, the brothers built handsome homes for their families. William Barber’s still stands as the “Barber House Restaurant”. Business declined in the early 1880s and the mill empire passed out of their hands in 1882.
