Want to help keep Mississauga clean and green? Here's how you can get your school involved: 1. appoint a "green chair" The City of Mississauga, in partnership with EcoSource, encourages your school to get involved by appointing a student to the "Green Chair" position on your Student Council Committee. The chair will be responsible for anything relating to the environment that the school wishes to pursue and includes the following commitments for one school year: - adoption of a park including two litter cleanups
- two waste audits and one school-wide waste reduction campaign facilitated with EcoSource through its WasteWatchers Program
- one Idle-Free Driver Awareness Blitz targeted to drivers on school property
- and participation in one tree planting event in a city park
At the end of the school year, the student chair and a school representative will be invited to Council to receive a Certificate of Recognition, from the Mayor and Members of Council, for completing the program. To participate in the program, contact litter.bug@mississauga.ca 2. develop your own school programs - Organize a Litter Patrol to inspect each classroom and the school ground for litter.
- Hold a Poster Contest in which students make their own anti-litter signs.
- Put on a Litter Art show. Use discarded items such as orange juice cans, paper milk cartons, meat trays, etc. to make pencil holders, mobiles and book ends.
3. take responsibility Make sure there are an adequate number of trash cans outside including recycling bins; ask your custodial staff to empty them regularly. Post signage throughout the school to remind students not to litter & to recycle. 4. plant a tree Host a tree planting event with the City of Mississauga by calling 311 and If outside the City limits call 905-615-4311.
