The Natural Areas Survey (NAS) is a study which identifies and inventories natural areas within the City including woodlands, wetlands, creeks and streams. These areas comprise roughly 9% of the total area of the City and are referred to as the Natural Areas System. The study also recommends strategies and guidelines for their future protection. The study consists of 4 phases: review of existing reports and data bases; survey of public opinion on environmental issues; site visits to remnant natural areas; and development of databases for the natural areas. Each year one quadrant of the City is updated.
