Open Data Corporate Policy and Procedures

On June 17, 2015 General Committee approved a corporate policy on our open data program. This is great news as it will extend the open data program to all parts of the corporation, no longer limited to the Planning and Building Department.

Over the last year, I had the pleasure of working with a representative team of Managers across the corporation, along with the City Manager’s Office to help with the development of this corporate policy. We provided a small education package to bring the Managers up to speed with current trends in open data, and we held a few workshops to identify and mitigate the issues around the corporate wide use of open data. We also worked to develop an inventory of datasets from across the city that may or may not be applicable in the open data program. Kindly review the following documents presented to General Committee

Going forward, the open data program will be led by the IT Division of the Corporate Services Department. My role will be to chair the newly formed Open Data Working Group. This working group reports to the IT Steering Committee and I am looking forward to working with

  • IT on the development of a new open data platform
  • Clerks and Legal on the development of our open data guidelines
  • Communications on the development of a communications plan for open data
  • IT on the delivery of an open data hackathon event, and
  • IT in developing partnerships with other agencies around open data
