Erosion and Sediment Control

The City has an Erosion and Sediment Control By-law, 512-91.

The purpose of this by-law is to protect and conserve topsoil, and in instances wherein this cannot be done, to restore areas in which topsoil has been removed. This serves to protect the integrity of the land, as well as prevent the excessive sedimentation of local streams and rivers that can occur when soil is removed.

Under this by-law, a permit must be obtained before any individual or company can remove more than 1 hectare of topsoil. This is accomplished by completing an Erosion and Sediment Control Plan as outlined in the By-Law and submitting it to the Transportation and Works Department.
