Terms of Use of Library Computers

By logging on to this Library Computer you are agreeing to be bound by the current version of these Terms of Use. Please read these Terms of Use carefully. You will be asked to accept or reject them before you are permitted access to the Internet via this Library Computer. Your access is conditional upon your accepting these Terms of Use.

Our Purpose: The purpose of the Mississauga Library System (the Library) is to provide library services to meet the life-long informational, educational, cultural and recreational needs of all Mississauga citizens. In support of this purpose, the Library provides Internet access to users of all ages. Library staff is available for basic assistance. For in-depth or personal instruction staff can suggest books, manuals, tutorials and training opportunities.

Library Not Liable: The Library assumes no responsibility for any damages, direct or indirect, arising from any access to or use of the Library Computers and Internet including, but not limited to, Email use. The Library provides Internet access as a privilege, not a right. Accordingly, such access may be restricted or revoked at any time at the sole discretion of the Library or its staff for any reason whatsoever. Any person who accesses the Internet through the Library is personally responsible and liable for his or her own actions and use. The Library has installed Anti-Virus Detection Applications which may block, and in some cases, delete harmful files. Library Computer Use, Internet access and Email use is at the user's sole risk.

Internet Content May Be Unreliable, Offensive, etc.: The Internet offers access to a wealth of material that can be personally and professionally enriching. Be warned, however, that it is an unregulated environment containing information and opinions that range in scope from reliable and authoritative to harmful, controversial, extremely offensive or inflammatory. Some information found on the Internet may not be accurate, complete, or current. Reliance upon any material on the Internet shall be at your sole risk: all such material should be verified independently before you use or rely on it. The Library is not responsible or liable for the content or quality of material retrieved and makes no warranty, express or implied, as to any material found on the Internet.

Parents Responsible for Supervising Their Children’s Internet Use: Children are entitled to access all information and facilities in the Library. As with other library materials, the supervision of children using the Internet is the responsibility of their parents or guardians.

Behaviour to Fellow Internet Users: Internet workstations are located in a public environment shared by users of all ages. Internet users should respect the privacy of others by refraining from observing or commenting on what is being viewed by other users. The behaviour of Internet users should not be disruptive or threatening. Internet users are responsible for the sites they select.

Internet Not Secure: The Internet is not a secure medium and third parties may be able to obtain information about user activities. The Library assumes no responsibility or liability for the security or privacy of online transactions.

Compliance with Laws: Internet users are subject to federal, provincial and municipal laws regulating Internet use including the provisions of the Criminal Code regarding obscenity, child pornography, incitement of hate and sedition. The copying or distribution of material found on the Internet may infringe on copyright or other intellectual property rights and the Library shall not be responsible or liable for such activities. Use of Library workstations for illegal or unethical purposes is prohibited and may result in civil and/or criminal prosecution. By logging on to this Library Computer, the user agrees to comply with all laws and regulations applicable to the user and the Library including, but not limited to, the laws already referred to in this paragraph and all confidentiality, privacy and security laws.

Alteration is Prohibited: Altering Library hardware or software is prohibited. Altering includes, but is not limited to, damaging or attempting to damage equipment, interfering with network integrity or security, changing workstation configurations, and downloading software, applications, files, pictures, videos, or music including viruses.

Prohibited Activities: No Internet user shall use this Library Computer to send spam or threatening emails or to hack websites or to contaminate any other computer by viruses, worms, etc.

Obey Rules: All Internet users must adhere to all rules posted in the Library regarding use of this Computer, including rules about time restrictions. The Library reserves the right to terminate an Internet session at any time. Misuse of the Internet including but not limited to the activities listed above may result in any or all of the following: expulsion from the Library, loss of library privileges, or civil and/or criminal prosecution.
