General Traffic Signal Information:
There are over 690 signalized intersections within the City of Mississauga that are
controlled by the City's Central Traffic Computer System. This includes intersections under the
jurisdiction of the Region of Peel, Ministry of Transportation Ontario, Halton Region and the
Greater Toronto Airport Authority. The Traffic Signal and Street Lighting Section is
responsible for the construction, maintenance and operation of signalized intersections under
the City's jurisdiction.
New Traffic Signal Requests:
The City of Mississauga uses guidelines set out in the Ministry of Transportation
Ontario's TRAFFIC SIGNAL WARRANT to determine when new traffic signals should be installed. The
warrant takes into consideration the following:
- Total Intersection Volume
- Pedestrian Movements
- Collision History
Traffic Signal Timing:
The Traffic Signal and Street Lighting Section is responsible for the timing and
efficient operation of signalized intersections under City jurisdiction. Each year the
department responds to hundreds of requests for new left-turn phasing and other
timing/operational issues. Each request is reviewed and stored in files specific to the
intersection for future reference.
There are two levels of signal timing:
- Intersection Signal Timing
- Network Signal Timing
Intersection Timing:
Intersection specific signal timings are developed for each intersection based on its
individual characteristics. These timings include:
- Minimum and maximum times for vehicles by direction
- Pedestrian timing
- Clearance intervals (amber, all red)
- Left-turn signal timing
Clearance Intervals Signal Timing (Amber, All Red):
The amber signal indication is a warning to drivers that their right-of-way is about
to be terminated and assigned to conflicting traffic. The all red indication occurs when all
displays at the intersection are red and is intended to give time for vehicles in the
intersection to clear before the conflicting green indication is displayed. The City of
Mississauga calculates the clearance interval based on guidelines set by the Ministry of
Transportation Ontario.
Network Signal Timing:
The goal of network based signal timing is to coordinate traffic progression through a
series of traffic signals on a section of roadway. Timing plans are created based on time of
day and traffic volumes.
