A Doggone Good Read: Mississauga’s Top Pet Names of 2022

City services | December 8, 2022

The holiday season is upon us, and while some people are making lists and checking them twice, we are pawsitively delighted to bring you the most purrfect list of the year: Mississauga’s most common – and least common – pet names of 2022!

Out of more than 23,000 registered pooches, Mississauga’s top dogs were:

5. Coco
4. Bailey
3. Bela
2. Charlie
1. Max

We had a few uniquely named dogs licenced, too! It seems a few local pups are trying to name drop to get into the best off-leash parks in town: Snoop, Yoda and Neo all raised the woof for Mississauga in 2022.

Of the close to 14,000 registered cats, Mississauga’s finest felines were:

5. Max
4. Kitty
3. Tiger
2. Tigger
1. Smokey

The uncommon names are always fun, too. With a name like Sweet Pea, we know we have at least one Mississauga kitty who is already making up for their sassy cattitude! Mississauga is also home to a Chili, Moo, and Meow Meow (there is a chance Meow Meow picked their own name).

Does your pet have ID?

All dogs and cats require pet licences in Mississauga, but out of the estimated 80,000 cats and 60,000 dogs in the city, only 37,000 were registered in 2022. License fees vary based on animal type, age, and spay/neuter status and range from $15 to $45, with discounted two-year licences available.

While it is a requirement, there are benefits from licencing your pet. Licenced pets wear tags on their collars; these tags serve as your pet’s ID and are enormously helpful if your pet ever gets lost.

Pet licence fees also go to help our Animal Services teams care for local animals, including:

  • Care for and feed homeless pets
  • Return lost pets to their homes
  • Provide veterinary services to animals in our care
  • Rescue sick, injured domestic animals and wildlife
  • Provide 24/7 emergency animal rescue services
  • Investigate animal care issues
  • Keep neighbourhoods safe for people and pets
  • Conduct community education programs

More information about pet ownership in Mississauga is available on the Animal Services web page.
