City of Mississauga Hiring Workers for 2018 Municipal Election

Looking to earn some extra money, give back to the community and gain valuable experience? The City of Mississauga is hiring for the upcoming municipal election on Monday, October 22, 2018. Overall, the City requires more than 2,500 staff to work Election Day.

“Election Day is not only an important day for our city and residents, it’s also a huge undertaking that requires thousands of people to come together and contribute to successfully execute it,” said Diana Rusnov, City Clerk and Director, Legislative Services for the City of Mississauga. “Working a municipal election is a great way to engage with your community, while also putting some extra money in your pocket. We are very grateful for everyone who helps out.”

Interested friends and family members can also apply as a “Group”, which allows them all to work together at the same voting location (subject to scheduling). The City will try to accommodate those requests as much as possible.

The available jobs include:

Location Manager (Compensation: $400 including training)

• Overall operation of the voting location
• Ensuring the voting location is properly set up for when the voting location opens
• Resolving any issues with candidates, scrutineers, workers and voters
• Picking up and distributing supplies and ballots
• Ensuring election results have been transmitted successfully
• Completing all closing procedures when the voting location closes
• Returning all supplies and ballots after the voting location closes

Location Managers must have previous municipal election experience in a supervisory role to be eligible for this position.

Deputy Returning Officer (Compensation: $270 including training)

• Issuing ballots to qualified electors
• Using an electronic system to:
  • Process electors and to strike their names off the electronic voters’ lists; and
  • Revise the voters’ list
• Verifying the identities of voters
• Assisting in setting up and packing up laptops

Deputy Returning Officers must have experience using a laptop, have good attention to detail and be able to sit for an extended period of time.

Operator (Compensation: $270 including training and equipment pick up)

• Feeding marked ballots through a vote tabulator
• Ensuring vote tabulator is operating properly
• Picking up and returning the vote tabulator to/from a designated location
• Assisting with voting location set up, opening and closing

Operators must have a valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle on Election Day in order to transport the vote tabulator to and from the voting location.

Information Officer (Compensation: $245 including training)

• Serving as a greeter at the entrance to the voting location
• Demonstrating how to mark a ballot
• Ensuring electors have a Voter Notification Card and/or identification
• Posting all signage inside and outside of the polling location prior to the opening of the polls
• Assisting with voting location set up, opening and closing

Eligibility: You must be legally entitled to work in Canada and have access to a personal email address (not shared).

Time Commitment: The hours for all workers on Election Day are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.  In addition, workers will be required to attend in person training (two hours) in October.  Deputy Returning Officers will also need to complete online training (one hour).

Municipal elections are held every four years as per Ontario’s Municipal Elections Act (1996). In this year’s municipal election for the City of Mississauga, voters are asked to elect the Mayor, Ward Councillors, School Board Trustees and for the first time in Mississauga, the Peel Regional Chair. Also new this year is ‘Vote Anywhere’ which allows electors to vote at any voting location throughout the City during Advance Polls and anywhere in their respective ward on Election Day.
