The use of recreational cannabis became legal in Canada on October 17, 2018.

Business and innovation | November 21, 2018

The use of recreational cannabis became legal in Canada on October 17, 2018. Ontario has elected to allow for recreational cannabis to be sold on-line or in privately operated retail stores. The location and operation of these private stores will be under the control of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), which is also responsible for regulating gaming and alcohol sales in the province. The City of Mississauga is considering whether Mississauga should opt in or out of private retail sales of cannabis. The City is also looking at locations where smoking or other use of recreational cannabis could be prohibited on City property; however the City cannot completely prohibit the smoking or vaping of cannabis.

The City wants to directly hear from residents on these matters. Responses can be provided either online through a survey or by attending a Public Information Session. The City has also conducted an independent telephone survey, using Forum Research, to gain direct input from residents across the City.

After all the consultation has concluded, the City will review the public’s input along with other relevant data, inputs and trends before presenting formal feedback to the Province.
