New Events Committee to Engage Community in Activating New Streetsville Village Square

Entertainment and activities | February 26, 2015

Council endorsed the creation of a Streetsville Village Square Event Committee and approved bylaw changes that will bring Streetsville Village Square to life with community programs and events.

“Streetsville Village Square will attract many new exciting activities and be a great location to expand and host our traditional events such as Canada Day, Remembrance Day and the Bread and Honey Festival,” said Ward 11 Councillor George Carlson.  “No matter what time of year, the new square is a welcoming place, attractive meeting place and focal point for the Streetsville community.”

The new community based committee, led by the Streetsville Business Improvement Area (BIA) and City of Mississauga staff, is responsible for assessing and approving event and activity requests. It also includes representatives from the Streetsville Legion, Main Street businesses, Peel Regional Police and the not-for-profit community base in Streetsville.

Council approved changes to City bylaws including the Noise Bylaw, Special Events Temporary Road Closure Bylaw and the Prohibit Sale of Goods on Highways Bylaw to accommodate activities and traffic during events.

“The bylaw changes will transform the area and street into the barrier-free, accessible and people-friendly space that the Square was designed to be,” added Carlson. “We are looking forward to celebrating our community’s diversity and hosting fitness, music, art, dance activities and events for residents of all ages to enjoy.”

Background

In 2012, the City conducted an engagement process with local residents and community organizations on how to transform the new Streetsville Village Square into a vibrant public space.  One of the strongest sentiments from community members was to create a space that encourages social interaction and community building through community events and activities.  Making the square a vibrant and animated cultural hub was a key recommendation from many local organizations and stakeholders.

Streetsville Village Square is an open air venue with a standing capacity of 3,000 people when Main Street is closed between Church and Queen Streets.  The space can host theatrical, musical and other small scale artistic and cultural events.
