Port Credit Library closure FAQs

Port Credit Library is currently closed due to structural issues. You can find out more about the closure through the following frequently asked questions:

The closure is as a result of routine, structural monitoring of the building. During a recent assessment, a few of the caissons or piers that support the building were found to have degraded due to exposure over a prolonged period of time. The City made the decision to close the library to the public. At no time has public or employee safety been compromised.

The City completed a conditional assessment of the structural piers in November 2016. Through that assessment, recommendations were made to proactively monitor the structure. The City has been conducting ongoing monitoring of this facility since January 2017.

In April 2021, the City retained an engineering consulting firm to complete a detailed site assessment of the Port Credit Library supports. This was done as part of the ongoing monitoring program and recommendations from the 2016 report. The consultant completed the assessment in May and a final report was issued to the City on June 30.

In accordance with the report, the library is closed to the public but will be accessible for maintenance and by limited staff.

Ensuring buildings remain in a state of good repair and follow life-cycle maintenance schedules is paramount for the City.

City staff will work with the consultant and Council to review options for the library and interim service opportunities. We will also be engaging with the community regarding next steps and timelines once we have more information on these options. This work is expected to take several months to complete.

The Library has established a Pop Up location in the Port Credit Memorial Arena to provide access to a small collection, holds pick-up, computer use and limited study space.

Holds that would normally be picked up at the Port Credit Library can now be picked up at Port Credit Memorial Arena Pop Up Library during the following times:

  • Monday – closed
  • Tuesday 9:30 a.m. – 9 p.m.
  • Wednesday 9:30 a.m. – 9 p.m.
  • Thursday 9:30 a.m. – 9 p.m.
  • Friday 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Saturday 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Sunday – closed

Customers can choose an alternate pick-up library location. To select a different library location for your pending holds, please log into My Account on the Library Catalogue. Materials can be returned at Port Credit Memorial Arena Pop Up Library during  open hours. In addition, items borrowed from Port Credit Library can be returned at any Mississauga Library location.
