In Recreation we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to be active in a way that suits their abilities and comfort levels. This is why we have expanded our program options to include therapeutic programming. Therapeutic recreation programming differs from traditional recreation with specifically designed programs for those who may be:
Living with a chronic disease
Recovering from an injury/surgery with the required rehabilitation completed
Instructed to be physically active by a medical professional
Our therapeutic recreational programs are not intended to take the place of physical, occupational or other therapies. We recommend that participants must:
Receive approval from a medical or health care professional to participate in programs
Be able to participate in physical activity that does not require the direct supervision of a medical or health professional
Be independent in decision making and personal care or have a support worker attending the program to assist in these areas
Why Participate In Therapeutic Programs
Improved Quality of Life
Medical research has proven that regular physical activity:
Assists in reducing risk and/or successful management of a wide variety of chronic diseases
Assists in improving the quality of life and reduction of pain
Speeds up and improves the recovery from injury and surgery
Increases overall energy and mental well-being
Programs with a therapeutic focus allow individuals to participate in safe, inclusive and appropriate activities led by certified instructors.
Building on the need for people to manage their health and fitness, our community centre staff has worked in consultation with Trillium Health Centres (Credit Valley Hospital and Trillium Health Centre) and other health care professionals to develop programs for specific conditions.
We understand that living with a chronic disease, an acquired physical disability or recuperating from an injury or surgery can be difficult and lead to changes to your independence, daily routines, eating habits and need for exercise. We want to help get you back on track living the best life you can.
Water Provides Special Benefits
The warm water in our therapeutic pools provide a number of benefits that include:
Reduced effects of gravity allowing for more comfortable movement
Reduced effects of gravity allowing for more comfortable movement
Positive pressure providing support
Increased circulation of blood and oxygen to the body
Warmth and relaxation for the entire body
These benefits allow participants to exercise longer due to less pain which results in:
Faster healing
Strengthening of muscles around joints increasing range of motion and mobility
Successful exercise routines that provide benefit and increased quality of life
You do not have to know how to swim to take classes. Try an exercise class held in the therapeutic pools.
Facility Accessibility
All of our community centres are accessible. Review our Find Us tab for site specific amenities. March of Dimes granted Malton and Clarkson pools the Award of Merit Barrier-Free Design award in 2011.
Familiar Equipment
Treadmills, elliptical machines, resistance bands, stability balls, light hand and ankle weights are all pieces of equipment used in both rehabilitation and post rehabilitation exercise programs. If you have completed rehabilitation programs our equipment and programs will be familiar to you.
Our certified instructors with specialized training offer safe exercise programs for a wide range of abilities. These exercise programs will support the management of chronic disease and encourage the healing process.
Our programs are not intended to take the place of physical, occupational or other therapies. Participating in various programs can result in an improved healing process and better management of chronic disease.
We offer three ways you can participate in therapeutic classes:
